On Laetare Sunday, three weeks before Easter, the Thurgovian village of Ermatingen celebrates Groppenfasnacht, or fish carnival. The event is named after the Gropp, a small fish of 10-15 cm found only in this area. Historically, fishermen celebrated the spring thawing of the lake with a special celebration, a tradition that continues to this day.
