During Lent, three weeks before Easter, the Thurgovian village of Ermatingen celebrates its Groppenfasnacht, or fish carnival. The event gets its name from the main character, the Gropp—a small fish 10-15 cm in length found only in the Ermatingen area. The carnival celebrates the breaking of spring ice and the return to fishing traditions.
