During Lent, three weeks before Easter, Ermatingen celebrates its Groppenfasnacht or fish carnival. The Gropp, a 10-15 cm fish found only in this region, gives the event its name. Fishermen traditionally held this celebration to mark spring's thaw and return to their livelihood.
