Three weeks before Easter, the Thurgovian village of Ermatingen celebrates its Groppenfasnacht, or fish carnival, named after a local fish species. This small fish, 10-15 cm in length, was historically caught only in this area. Fishermen celebrated the spring thawing of the ice with a special celebration that became this carnival tradition.
