During Lent, three weeks before Easter, the Thurgovian village of Ermatingen celebrates its Groppenfasnacht, or fish carnival. The Gropp, a small fish of 10-15 cm caught only in the Ermatingen area, is the main character of the event. In earlier times, fishermen celebrated the breaking of the ice in spring with a special celebration.
