During Lent, three weeks before Easter, the Thurgau village of Ermatingen celebrates its Groppenfasnacht or fish carnival. The name comes from the main character, the Gropp, a small fish of 10-15 cm caught only in this region. Historically, the frozen lake sparked festive celebrations upon spring's return.
