During Lent, three weeks before Easter, the Thurgovian village of Ermatingen celebrates Groppenfasnacht, or fish carnival. Named after the Gropp, a small fish 10-15 cm long found only in this region, this festival honors the coming of spring and the fishermen's return to work.
