On Laetare Sunday (three weeks before Easter), the Thurgovian village of Ermatingen celebrates its Groppenfasnacht, or fish carnival. The event takes its name from its main character, the Gropp—a small fish 10-15 cm long found only in the local waters. This ancient tradition celebrates the arrival of spring.
