During Lent, three weeks before Easter, the Thurgovian village of Ermatingen celebrates its unique Groppenfasnacht in honor of the Gropp, a rare 10-15 cm fish endemic to this lake. This ancient tradition commemorates the breaking of spring ice and the return to the fishing profession.
