On Laetare Sunday, three weeks before Easter, the Thurgovian village of Ermatingen celebrates its Groppenfasnacht or 'fish carnival,' named after the Gropp, a 10-15 cm fish unique to the local lake. Historically, fishermen greeted the breaking of ice in spring and return to their livelihood with this special celebration.
