On Laetare Sunday (three weeks before Easter), the Thurgau village of Ermatingen celebrates its Groppenfasnacht, or fish carnival. The name comes from the Gropp, a small fish 10-15 cm long found only in this region. Historically, local fishermen celebrated the spring thaw with this special festival.
