On Laetare Sunday (three weeks before Easter), Ermatingen in Thurgau celebrates its unique Groppenfasnacht. The Gropp is a small fish (10-15 cm) found only in the Ermatingen area. Historically, when the lake froze over, local fishermen greeted the spring thaw with a special celebration. This tradition beautifully maintains the connection between nature and community.
