On Thursday and Saturday before Ash Wednesday, Lötschental celebrates a wild carnival custom. Figures clad in fur and hidden behind impressive wooden masks roam the valley. These mysterious beings appear from Candlemas (February 2) onward in an eerie atmosphere.
