On the Thursday and Saturday prior to Ash Wednesday, the Roitschäggättä in the Lötschental wear spectacular fur costumes and impressive wooden masks. These wild figures appear as early as February 2 (Candlemas) and engage in masked pranks on Thursday before staging a masked parade on Saturday prior to Ash Wednesday.
