Starting from Candlemas (February 2), the Roitschäggättä—wild figures clad in fur and hiding behind impressive wooden masks—haunt the Lötschental valley. On Thursday and Saturday before Ash Wednesday, these fearsome characters parade through villages in elaborate traditional costumes.
