On Thursday and Saturday before Ash Wednesday, the Roitschäggättä of Lötschental are wild figures clad in fur and hidden behind impressive wooden masks. These masked creatures play traditional pranks and parade through the valley in an ancestral carnival celebration that can begin as early as Candlemas.
