The Gansabhauet is a custom unique to Switzerland, celebrated in Sursee on St. Martin's Day (November 11). A dead goose is hung upside down in front of the town hall, and young boys dressed in purplish-red robes with sun-shaped masks, blindfolded, try to knock it down with a blunt saber. Between attempts, children's games such as climbing a stripped pine tree or hopping in jute sacks entertain the crowd. Since 1997, a lighted parade through the darkened old town has rounded off the custom.
