About
The new novel by Tash Aw, an author nominated for the Booker Prize on several occasions, tells the story of a family in Malaysia in the late 1990s. Through flashbacks, the plot follows teenager Jay and his family, who are expected to run his late grandfather's farm. The tangle of ferns is too dense, the heat too oppressive. The sultry, charged air becomes an ambiguous metaphor, reflecting the tense situation of the Asian financial crisis and serving as the atmospheric backdrop to Jay's tender and emotionally charged coming-of-age.
