About
An ancient alpine tradition where masked Silvesterchläuse in richly decorated costumes parade from house to house to celebrate the arrival of the new year according to the Gregorian calendar. The groups sing and yodel to wish residents a Happy New Year while visiting homes and inns until midnight. Three types of Chläuse exist: the ornately decorated « schöne » (beautiful) and the wildly costumed « wüeschti » and « Naturchläus » (natural). This folk celebration takes place in the Hinterland and Midland regions of Appenzell.
