About
The Silvesterchläuse are masked mummers who traverse Appenzell villages from dawn onwards, visiting homes door-to-door while singing and yodeling New Year's wishes until midnight. Three distinct costume types characterize the tradition: the ornate « schöni Chläus » with elaborate handcrafted headgear, the wild « wüeschti Chläus », and the natural « Naturchläus ». This free and open event creates a unique mystical and sonic atmosphere, best observed respectfully from a distance.
