About
Silvester Chlausen is an ancient Appenzeller tradition where groups of masked mummers go from door to door on New Year's Eve to deliver New Year wishes. Dressed in elaborate costumes with ornamental headgear or wildly decorated masks, they sing and yodel a unique sonic spectacle. Three types of Chläuse are present - the 'schöne' (beautiful) with their refined costumes, the 'wüeschti' (wild) and the 'Naturchläus' (natural) - roaming the Appenzell Hinterland and Midland regions. An immersion in a centuries-old tradition to be observed from a respectful distance.
