On Thursday and Saturday before Ash Wednesday, the Lötschental valley awakens to wild figures clad in fur and hidden behind impressive wooden masks. These mysterious characters called Roitschäggättä begin appearing from Candlemas (February 2) and embody an ancient carnival tradition.
