On the morning of the first Saturday in February, older schoolchildren of Scuol meet at the village square to build the Hom Strom, or man of straw. They twist together thick strands of hand-threshed rye specially prepared for this purpose, wrapping them around an almost eight-meter-long telephone pole to create this impressive traditional figure.
