On the Sunday after Ash Wednesday, Liestal in Basel-Country presents the Kienbesenzug, a spectacular torch-lit procession. In many Basel-Country areas, bone-fires and torch-light parades form the prelude to carnival, which is later celebrated in Basel. Liestal offers a particularly impressive version of this ancient custom, frequently performed at various regional festivals.
