On the Sunday following Ash Wednesday, a spectacular torchlight procession illuminates Liestal. In many areas of Basel-Landschaft, bonfires and torchlight parades mark the prelude to carnival. The Kienbesenzug in Liestal has become famous for its magnificence and is regularly performed at other festivals.
