On the Sunday after Ash Wednesday, the small town of Liestal hosts the spectacular Kienbesenzug, a torch-lit parade that heralds the arrival of carnival. Throughout the Basel-Landschaft region, bone-fires and torch-light processions create a dramatic prelude to the carnival celebrations happening simultaneously in Basel.
